Patients consider legal action against cosmetic surgeon
24 Nov 2008
Two patients are considering legal action against a cosmetic surgeon from the north-east after eye-lift operations went wrong.
Dr Ashish Dutta, who runs the Aesthetic Beauty Centre in Sunderland, was warned by the General Medical Council (GMC) that his conduct during the operations constituted misconduct.
However the GMC found that Dr Dutta has since improved his skills, so he can continue to practise.
In both operations Dr Dutta made incisions “more than an acceptable distance below ciliary (eyelash) margin” and in one case the incisions were “uneven by reference to the ciliary margin”.
Julia Cotterill, a solicitor at Patientlawyers.com, is representing the two patients. She said, “Our clients are not only disappointed that their procedures have not produced the desired result, but feel let down.
"Our clinical negligence team deals with a number of cases relating to cosmetic surgery, and if a procedure is not performed correctly it can do lasting damage to someone's appearance and self-esteem.”
