Improvements planned at Derbyshire hospital

22 Dec 2008

The board of directors at Chesterfield Royal Hospital have approved £15m plans to improve facilities next year.

£13 million will be spent on creating three new emergency wards and £2 million will be spent on the birthing suite.

Improvements to the birthing suite will begin in July 2009, with work on the three new wards likely to start in winter 2010.

The scheme will be funded using cash built up by the hospital as a result of increased financial independence since it became a foundation trust.

Richard Gregory, chairman of the board, said: “The board is determined we should make the most of our financial freedoms and these two schemes continue that approach. We are investing in quality and capacity.”

Georgina Sheldon, a medical law solicitor at Patientlawyers.com, said: “It is hoped that the planned expenditure at Chesterfield Royal Hospital will reduce waiting times for emergency treatment and improve the maternity facilities. Clearly, this is positive news for the Chesterfield community and it should provide  it with access to a higher standard of NHS treatment and care.”
