Free prescriptions for cancer patients from April 1st

22 Jan 2009

Cancer patients will soon be able to get all their prescriptions for free, even if the medicines are not related to their cancer.

Patients can now collect a certificate from GPs that entitles them to free prescriptions.

Applications made before the 24th March will be processed in time for April 1st. Those who miss the deadline can apply for refunds on any prescription payments made after this date.

The certificates allow patients to get free prescriptions for five years, even if they are declared free of cancer during this time. The certificates can be renewed as many times as the patient needs.

Ally Taft, a medical law solicitor for Patientlawyers.com, said: “This is a good decision for people suffering from cancer and will remove the extra worry of having to pay for expensive prescriptions.”
