Care Quality Commission launched

01 Apr 2009

As of April 1st, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of health and social care in England.

The new watchdog replaces the Healthcare Commission, the Mental Health Act Commission and the Commission for Social Care Inspection.

CQC Chair Barbara Young said: “CQC will join up the regulation of health and adult social care across the public and independent sectors for the first time. The public wants good quality of care wherever it is provided and wants care that is joined up.”

The NHS Confederation has welcomed the launch of CQC, with chief executive Steve Barnett saying: “Its great potential is to bring about better, more joined up regulation that includes mental health, social care and health services.”
