New Wave of CJD Feared
19 Dec 2008
A new wave of vCJD (the human form of BSE) is feared following reports of a new case in someone with a version of a gene known as MV.
All the cases so far have been in people with a key gene known as MM.
Irwin Mitchell have acted for most of the families of those struck down with vCJD to-date, and negotiated the government compensation scheme - now run through the vCJD Trust - after representing the families at the BSE Inquiry.
David Body said "This is extremely sad, but perhaps not unexpected, news, given the waves of cases we have seen in relation to Human Growth Hormone (Hgh) related CJD.
We have to hope that the research into this devastating disease continues, and that there is some hope to be found in current experimental treatment for CJD with PPS, which seems to have prolonged the lives of three young people."
We were also involved in the successful Human Growth Hormone /CJD Litigation in the 1990s, and have more recently successfully applied to Court for permission for experimental treatment with 'PPS' (Pentosan Polysulphate) to be given to young victims of vCJD.
