Maternity mistakes down to funding
02 Sep 2008
In response to a recent report published in relation to the safety of maternity wards up and down the country Angela Curran from the Newcastle office has made her opinion clear.
Angela, who deals with many birth trauma negligence claims, stated that unless funding and resources on maternity units are improved, clinical negligence claims will continue. Often the most worrying aspect is that the majority of cases could easily be avoided if staffing levels and training problems were addressed.
Inadequate funding can lead to claims involving severe disabilities and the Trust often has to pay high levels of compensation to patients who cannot afford to fund their care needs.
Although Angela acknowledged there may be mistakes caused by human error, many of the cases are due to funding issues within the maternity sector.
