Law Firm Welcomes Treatment Centre Inquiry
09 Jan 2009
A decision by the Healthcare Commission to investigate standards of care at Eccleshill Independent Treatment Centre has been welcomed by the law firm representing the fiancée of John Hubley.
Irwin Mitchell acted on behalf of Bren Neale during Mr Hubley’s inquest in November when West Yorkshire (Western District) Deputy Coroner Paul Marks recorded a verdict of death by misadventure aggravated by neglect.
Mr Hubley died in January 2007 when routine keyhole surgery to remove his gall bladder went badly wrong.
Rachelle Mahapatra, a partner and clinical negligence specialist at Irwin Mitchell’s Leeds office, said: “It is reassuring that the Healthcare Commission has acted so swiftly following recommendations made by the deputy coroner.
“The evidence heard during the inquest showed that the protocols in place at Eccleshill were grossly inadequate.
“We must hope that the significant flaws in procedure at the centre have been remedied to the satisfaction of the Healthcare Commission and that it is confident such tragic and preventable deaths are not allowed to occur again.”
