Edinburgh Prosthetics Expert Struck Off

12 Feb 2010

A prosthetics expert has been struck off after he admitted a string of mistakes.

Malcolm Griffiths left Patrick Morrison, 76, with a left-footed prosthesis instead of the right-footed prosthesis he needed. Mr Griffiths failed to spot the mistake during two subsequent check-ups.

At a disciplinary hearing, the Health Professionals Council was told that Mr Griffiths admitted 16 charges of incompetence relating to the treatment of 11 patients at Astley Ainslie Hospital in Edinburgh.

Mr Griffiths was struck off the professional register at his own request.

Tim Deeming, a medical negligence lawyer at Irwin Mitchell said: “It is vital that those requiring prosthetic care get the correct support to ensure that they are able to progress and adapt. Such basic errors put patients at risk, whilst also delaying the recovery that can be achieved.”
