Negligent sterilisation

Following a difficult pregnancy, Melissa decided that her family was complete, and that she did not wish to have any more children. She therefore underwent a sterilisation at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton.

Melissa was told that the procedure went well. However, 12 months later she discovered she was pregnant. She was extremely shocked and upset, and she made the difficult decision to undergo a termination of her pregnancy, again at New Cross Hospital. She underwent a salpingectomy (removal of the fallopian tubes) at the same time as her termination, and it was confirmed that her original sterilisation had been performed incorrectly since the clip on her left fallopian tube had not been properly attached.

Unfortunately, Melissa was left with retained products of conception following her termination procedure. She had to be readmitted to have these removed under another general anaesthetic. Following this, Melissa experienced very heavy bleeding which continued for a number of months. She was eventually admitted for a laparoscopy where she underwent endometrial ablation at New Cross Hospital.

Despite this, Melissa's bleeding still did not resolve. One month later she visited her GP and a theatre pack which had erroneously been left in situ following her last operation was removed.

With the help of medical negligence lawyer Emma Rush, a five figure settlement was achieved which has ensured Melissa can pay for cognitive behavioural therapy sessions to help her to cope with these events.
