Poor nursing care results in development of pressure sores
Tom was admitted to the Leicester General Hospital for treatment of kidney problems. Prior to this he was fit and well.
During his time at Leicester General Hospital Tom received very poor nursing care. As a result of not being turned, he developed numerous pressure sores on the right hip, under the scrotum, along the spine and across the shoulder blades.
He was treated for these but even following the diagnosis of his pressure sores, the nursing care he received remained poor. On more than one occasion the nursing staff treating Tom sealed his rectum with the pressure sore dressing which prevented him from opening his bowels and caused faecal matter to enter the pressure area.
Tom sadly passed away after 15 months of treatment. A Coroner's Inquest was held into the cause of his death, and a verdict of death by natural causes aggravated by neglect was given.
Tom left his wife and two children. With the help of clinical negligence lawyer Emma Rush, a case was pursued against the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and a five figure settlement was awarded to Tom's widow.
