I owe you a great deal of thanks for helping me through the very difficult process, both throughout the period of the inquiry and then latterly, during the civil claim. Your patience and understanding as well as the lengthy explanations made it a lot easier than I would have thought possible.

Man suffers psychiatric injury after human growth hormone injections

Since the successful Human growth Hormone / CJD Litigation, we have settled a number of cases for clients who have suffered psychiatric injuries from the fear of living with the threat of CJD hanging over them.

Each case has to be looked at on its own facts, and settlements have ranged from a few thousand pounds, to one case recently for our client Tony. He found out as a young man that he might be at risk of CJD from the Human growth hormone (Hgh) injections he had to help him grow as a child.

Tony was a high-flyer, but developed a psychiatric reaction which had a devastating impact on his ability to continue doing the job he loved.

Over a number of years, he has now made great progress with re-structuring his life to cope, but this is an on-going nightmare for all in this group. There is still no test to confirm if someone will go on to develop CJD, and, so far, only very experimental treatment if it does develop.

In an out of Court settlement, the case settled for over £400,000 – the largest award for psychiatric injury in this group to-date.

Delyth Jones of Patientlawyers.com said: "We continue to work with a number of individuals and families affected by this tragedy. Compensation cannot take away fears, or even begin to compensate for the loss of a loved one. We hope however, that claims can help provide some financial security for families - in a similar way to the compensation scheme we negotiated for victims of vCJD, following the BSE Inquiry (run through the vCJD Trust.)

We also continue to hope that medical breakthroughs will be made in the treatment of this dreadful condition."
