Surgical tools left inside patient's body

Julie underwent a laparoscopic appendicectomy and was informed when she returned to the ward that she would have to be taken back to theatre, as part of one of the surgical instruments used during the operation had been left inside her body.

She required a further operation under general anaesthetic to remove a small blade and safety shield which had become detached during the initial procedure.

With the support of her legal representatives, Julie received £6,000 compensation from the manufacturers of the surgical tool.
