Man sustains injuries from defective catheter

Injuries sustained by a man who had difficulty removing a faulty catheter led him to suffer coronary thrombosis. He brought a product liability claim against the manufacturers of the catheter.

The man had been used to using catheters but when he tried to remove a size sixteen one, in accordance with the manufacturers instructions, he got it stuck and had to remove it by force. As well as suffering intense pain, he suffered lacerations, bruising, scaring and a large loss of blood, which resulted in him being admitted to hospital.

At first, his temperature and blood pressure rose and he became unconscious due to a possible re-occurrence of epileptic fits. He was given antibiotics to treat septicaemia.

The following morning, however, he developed severe chest pains, which were diagnosed as coronary thrombosis and he was admitted to the Coronary Care Unit for treatment. He remained in hospital for a further ten days.

With the support of specialist solicitors experienced in claims for defective medical devices and products, the man received £11,000 compensation from the manufacturers of the defective catheter.
