Man dies after hospital fail to diagnose liver tumours
Mr Y was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2004 for which he was treated with a lengthy course of chemotherapy.
Mr Y was making a good recovery and was having routine and regular tumour marker tests to ensure that the cancer was not spreading.
One such test was carried out in February 2005 and showed raised and worrying results. However no action was taken.
Mr Y had an ultrasound of the liver in August 2005 that unfortunately revealed at least 3 metastases.
He was immediately referred for liver surgery the following week and an MRI was performed which showed 9 lesions in the liver.
Their size and shape showed that they had been present for some time.
In September 2005 Mr Y had surgery, during which the surgeon was able to remove 8 of the 9 tumours from the liver but it was just too late.
Mr Y died at home surrounded by his family in May 2007.
Mrs Y instructed us to bring an action on her own behalf and for her children against the hospital trust.
The case was successfully settled for £35,000.
