Guy Forster is an associate solicitor based in Birmingham and joined Irwin Mitchell in 2002, acting for clients who have suffered injuries or illnesses in a broad range of circumstances, including obstetrics, gynaecology, brain injury and wrongful birth claims.
Notable cases include a £2.5 million settlement for a mother following the failure to diagnose that her unborn baby was likely to be born with severe disabilities. Guy has acted for a number of parents where their child has died during or shortly after delivery due to negligent obstetric care and in 2009 secured one of the highest reported awards for such a claim. In 2009 he was successful at trial in a case involving maternal injury following negligent obstetric care (Dean –v- George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust).
Guy has developed an expertise in the field of fertility treatment including in vitro fertilisation and cryopreservation. Among others, he acted for a couple in a high profile claim for damages following an embryo mix-up at IVF Wales following failures in witnessing procedures. He is regularly asked by the media and others to speak on the subject of IVF adverse incidents.
Away from the field of assisted reproduction, obstetrics and gynaecology, Guy recently obtained an award of £625,000 for a young woman who lost her vision due to a delay in diagnosis of a brain abscess and, in a case involving a delay in diagnosis of a spinal tumour, secured damages of £1.75 million plus annual payments of £100,000 for life to provide for care and case management needs.
For Guy, the best part of the job is helping clients achieve their aims at what can be a most distressing and difficult time in their lives, whether they aim to secure compensation to fund their care needs or simply hope to obtain answers for why their treatment went wrong.
Outside the office, Guy is a keen runner and has taken part in the New York, Berlin and London marathons. Guy also loves watching sport and has been known to admit to being a Derby County supporter.
